Mandela Washington Readers Fellowships 2025 For International Students:
The U.S. Department of State and IREX have announced with great excitement the call for academic, professional, and local experts to assess and rank applications for the 2025 Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders. Over the Fellowship’s first nine years, about 434,000 applications from 49 sub-Saharan African countries have been submitted, filling 7,200 Fellow places. The Mandela Washington Fellowship, the premier programme of the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI), brings up-and-coming leaders to the United States for academic and leadership development. This initiative strengthens democratic government, fosters economic growth and prosperity, and enhances peace and security in both the United States and Africa with the help of Fellows and American citizens.

- Readers will assess about fifty applications using a grading system and predetermined criteria. Professionals and those pursuing degrees can benefit from the professional growth and resume-building opportunities presented by this volunteer opportunity. You will learn about the problems and solutions that sub-Saharan Africa is facing as a reader, as well as important procedures in higher education and international travel. By September 1, 2024, interested parties should submit the Reader Application form. Mid-September until early November 2024 is when the reading session runs. Reading through each application takes five to ten minutes. In September 2024, the chosen readers will receive correspondence.
Eligibility Criteria:
- Academics and/or professionals with experience in any of the three thematic areas of the Fellowship—business, civic engagement, or public management—make ideal readers.
- It is preferable to have prior experience working in Africa or on sub-Saharan African issues.
- Employees of the US government are qualified.
- Alumni of Fellowships are eligible.
- Readers cannot be applicants for the 2024 Fellowship.
