The John S. McCain International Scholarship for Military Families, also known as the Gilman-McCain Scholarship, was established under the State Department’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Programme. It is open to qualified students enrolled in recognised U.S. colleges and universities who receive any kind of Title IV federal financial aid.

Eligibility Criteria:

To be eligible for a Gilman-McCain Scholarship, you must:

  • Be a citizen or national of the United States.
  • Enrol as a first-year student at a four- or two-year U.S. college or institution that has received accreditation.
    be the spouse or child of an active-duty member of the United States military (including the Space Force, NOAA Commissioned Corps, USPHS Commissioned Corps, Army, Coast Guard, Marines, Navy, and their National Guard and Reserve components).
  • Possess proof that you are receiving, or will be receiving, Title IV federal financial assistance throughout your study abroad course.
  • Enrol in or receive acceptance into a credit-granting study abroad or internship programme.
  • Prior to receiving the scholarship funds, you must submit documentation of your admission.
  • Be putting in an application for a programme in a nation where the US Department of State has issued a level 1 or 2 travel advisory.
  • Acknowledge that even in safe nations, there might be locations with Level 3 or 4 warnings.
  • Academic staff members at Gilman-McCain are not allowed to enter these restricted locations. There are no programmes available for participation in countries or regions where the advice is to “Reconsider travel” (Level 3) or “Do not travel” (Level 4).
  • During any stage of the application, selection, or programme itself, the U.S. Department of State retains the right to request that you modify your programme to another nation or region if they deem it necessary.   • Travelling overseas in 2025, between September and April? Please submit your application by August 1st, 2024 (remember, your adviser must validate it by August 8th).
  • Do you have any travel plans for December 2024 to October 2025? Mid-August 2024 is when applications open. October 10, 2024 is the application deadline (your adviser must confirm before October 18).
