Applications are now being accepted for Hokkaido University’s prestigious Next Generation AI PhD Fellowship and EXEX Doctoral Fellowship programs, which will offer notable financial support to deserving PhD students in 2025. These scholarships provide a 400,000 yen annual research expense allowance and a 180,000 yen monthly research stipend, with possibilities for further support for innovative multidisciplinary research. For Incoming PhD Candidates:
- Start Date: You must enrol in Hokkaido University’s PhD program in October 2024 or April 2025.
- Research Potential: To demonstrate your research abilities and cross-disciplinary collaboration, a compelling research plan is necessary.
Information on Quotas for New Students:
- October of 2024 Entry: Four places available for the four-year program, and 38 for the three-year one.
- There are 122 spots available for the 3-year program and 24 for the 4-year program starting in April 2025.
Regarding Present PhD Candidates:
- All Are Welcome: Those who are currently enrolled as doctoral students at Hokkaido University may apply during any of the three entrance seasons (October 2024, April 2025).
- Choosing Candidates for Positions: If students who were previously given the fellowship decline it for any reason, such as accepting the JSPS Research Fellowship, vacancies may also be filled during this application round.

Essential Records:
- Research Proposal: A thorough proposal that follows the guidelines for your research study.
- A recommendation letter from your Hokkaido University supervisor is provided.
- Not required, but recommended:
- Evidence of Prior Education: documents (such as transcripts and certificates) attesting to your academic qualifications.
- English Proficiency Scores: Send in your results from an outside English language test, if available.
- Scholarly Works: Please include any published research publications with Impact Factors in your application if you have any.
Potentially Next Stage:
Candidates who have been shortlisted will be contacted for next steps, which could include:
- Interviews: The selection committee may ask you to participate in an interview.
- Research Explanatory Video: You could be required to provide a little video that succinctly and interestingly describes your research endeavour.
