Eligibility Criteria:

In order to be considered for a Jefferson Scholars Foundation National Fellowship, candidates must fulfil the subsequent requirements:

  • English is one of the required languages.
  • All nations across the world are eligible.
  • A Ph.D. candidate who plans to finish their dissertation by the end of the Fellowship year is required to apply. A post-doctoral scholarship is not what this is. Non-citizens of the United States may apply.
  • Every Fellow must attend two conferences: one in the spring and one in the autumn. The Jefferson Scholars Foundation and the University of Virginia’s academic community can hear research and conclusions presented at these conferences. Getting feedback from mentors who are also present is especially possible during the spring conference. Both conferences had their expenses covered by the Jefferson Scholars Foundation.
  • With the exception of the Jefferson Scholars/Hagley Library Dissertation Fellowship, which necessitates residency at the Hagley Library during the academic year, residence at the Jefferson Scholars Foundation is encouraged but not required for all Fellows. Fellows who elect to live in residence will receive an extra stipend of $1,500 in lieu of travel and lodging expenses for the spring and fall conferences, with the exception of the Jefferson Scholars/Hagley Library Fellow.
  • It is expected of all Fellows—regardless of residency—to engage with and support the Jefferson Scholars Foundation’s interdisciplinary community.

Application Process:

To be eligible for this fellowship, kindly adhere to the following guidelines:

The following materials make up the application, which must stay within the specified word or page limits:

  • The applicant’s information sheet
  • The 1,200 word project description should include a synopsis of your dissertation or book, the thesis, an explanation of how it advances or updates previous research, and the rationale behind your choice of topic.
    750-word blog post or opinion piece An op-ed that has been published or sampled (like those that appear in the New York Times) or a blog post that has been published or sampled (like those that appear on Slate.com) that connects a key finding from your research to a contemporary issue in public policy
  • Bibliography (three pages)
  • Two-page curriculum vitae
  • A writing sample (no more than 40 pages) should be chosen, and it should either be an accepted/published journal article OR a chapter from your dissertation with a one-page introduction placing the chapter in the larger project.
  • TWO recommendation letters, at least one of which must to come from your adviser. Recommendation letters can be started via the application process or submitted to  nationalfellows@jeffersonscholars.or the Selection Board’s email address.
