Robert S. McNamara Fellowships Program 2025 For International Students:

For a period of six to ten months, Ph.D. candidates from poor nations are awarded fellowships by the World Bank Robert S. McNamara Fellowship Programme to pursue innovative, development-related PhD research under the guidance of a study consultant at a partner organisation abroad.

Important Programme Elements

Professional experience: Fellows will interact with World Bank operations and work on World Bank projects under the close supervision of World Bank DEC experts. They will also receive training on state-of-the-art research techniques and technology. They may be able to participate in field trips, interact directly with our clients, and add to DEC’s published work as co-authors, depending on the nature of the projects.

Building capacity: At the beginning of the programme, fellows will participate in a one-week technical on-boarding that will include instruction on reproducible research procedures. To further develop their abilities, fellows will take part in recurring continuing education activities and trainings throughout the programme. Fellows will improve their capacity to recognise, research, and write about critical development policy issues through their engagement with DEC economists.

Research dissemination: Based on their fellowship research with the DEC researchers, fellows will be asked to produce a blog. This is a chance to present research and add to the conversation around development policy. Additionally The best four blogs will be featured on DEC’s Let’s Talk Development blog each year. Financial Benefits:

The following benefits are awarded to the Robert S. McNamara Fellowships Programme recipient:

  • The total net payment per fellow for an 8-month fellowship is $42,750 (paid in monthly instalments).
  • The selected candidates will get invitation letters from the World Bank’s HR division to assist them with their visa applications, as the fellows will be residing at the World Bank in Washington, D.C.

Note: The fellowship does not cover any costs related to bringing and/or supporting fellows’ families, including travel expenses and visa application fees.

Eligibility Criteria:

In order to be eligible for the Robert S. McNamara Fellowships Programme, applicants must fulfil the following requirements:

  • English is one of the required languages.
  • Nationals of World Bank WBG member nations are eligible, with a preference for those of developing nations.
  • Graduates of MA programmes or those pursuing a PhD in economics or a similar discipline at this time;
  • No older than 35 (by the time the fellowship begins on June 30 of that year);
  • Able to move to Washington, D.C. during the fellowship’s term.
