Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships 2024 For International Students:

The Federal Commission of Scholarships (FCS) and the Swiss government jointly sponsor the Swiss Scholarship. Over 180 countries are eligible for the Swiss Government Scholarship. Participants can be of any nationality. This award is open to highly educated postgraduate researchers in all academic subjects, as well as young medical physicians.

The Swiss Government Excellence award 2024-2025 is a fully-funded award for international students. This fellowship is available for master’s, doctoral, and postdoctoral studies.

The Research Scholarship is open to post-graduate researchers in any subject (with at least a master’s degree) who want to come to Switzerland to complete doctoral or post-doctoral research or extend their education.

Financial Benefits:

The recipients of the Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships 2021 will get the following benefits:

  • Special CHF 300 housing allowance (paid once at the commencement of the scholarship).
  • Half-fare public transport card valid for one year.
  • Swiss Government Excellence Scholarship recipients will receive support services as well as numerous vacations, meals, and sightseeing tours.

  • The scholarship is for CHF 1,920 per month.
  • The FCS exclusively pays for mandatory Swiss health insurance for non-EU and non-EFTA grantees.
  • There is no provision for family allowances.
  • Non-EU and non-EFTA scholarship holders are granted with a flight allowance (lump payment) for a return ticket to their home country.

Forms of Swiss Scholarships:

  • The research fellowship is offered to post-graduate researchers in any discipline (at least a master’s degree) who intend to come to Switzerland to conduct research or further their studies at the doctorate or post-doctoral levels.
    Research scholarships are available for research or study at all Swiss cantonal universities, universities of applied sciences, the two federal institutes of technology, and the four research institutes. Only candidates nominated by an academic mentor from one of these higher education institutions will be considered.
  • Art scholarships are available to art students who want to study their first master’s degree in Switzerland.
    Art scholarships are available for students attending any Swiss conservatory or institution of the arts. Only students from a select few countries are eligible for this grant.

Documents Required:

  • Compile the following documents:
    • signed FCS application form (typed and printed). with
    • A complete CV including a list of scholarly publications and accolades
    • A motivational letter (maximum of 2 pages).
    • A comprehensive study proposal (maximum 5 pages, signed), utilising just the FCS research proposal.
    • A copy of a letter from an academic host professor (with a short CV) at the chosen Swiss university stating her/his willingness to supervise and assist the research.
    • A brief CV of the academic mentor from the home university.
    • Two confidential letters of recommendation from two distinct professors in the applicant’s discipline (only use the FCS reference form for the first set, with originals in sealed envelopes). There will be no copies for the second batch.
    • Photos of previous university/college certificates and grade sheets, as well as diplomas with grades, commencing with the most recent.
      If not in English, use French, Italian, or German with documented, approved English translations. Please do not submit the original certificates.
    • A signed medical certificate (only use the FCS health certificate form).
    • Two photocopies of the applicant’s passport (main page with personal information). Dual nationals must include duplicates of both passports. Applicants who are already in Switzerland at the time of the application must include a copy of their Swiss residence permit.
  • The application package can be obtained via the Swiss delegation in your country.
  • Please submit two sets (one original and one copy) of application documents in the precise order specified below. The first set includes the original, signed documents, confidential letters of recommendation, and, if applicable, verified translations in English. The other set is a replica of the first set, with the exception of the confidential letters of recommendation. There are no duplicates for the second set.

Eligibility Criteria:

To be eligible for Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships, candidates must meet all of the standards listed below.

  • The required language is English.
  • Eligible countries include all countries in the world.
  • Master’s degree or comparable university degree obtained prior to July 31, 2022 (degree certificate) and recognised by the Swiss university. Before the grant can be issued, the degree must be provided to the Federal Commission for Scholarships as proof of eligibility.
  • Candidates must be born after December 31, 1987.
  • Applicants who have lived in Switzerland for more than a year as of the scholarship’s commencement date in September are ineligible.
  • Applicants must provide a letter from an academic host professor (with a brief CV) at the chosen Swiss university confirming her/his willingness to supervise and assist the research. Without such support, the application will be denied.
  • Applicants must submit a research proposal with a time period. This is the application’s major feature. The candidate must pay full attention to it.
  • Applicants must have the relevant language skills for the research/studies.
  • Applicants who have previously received a Swiss Government Excellence Scholarship are ineligible for a subsequent scholarship.
  • Scholarship awardees are expected to move to Switzerland for the duration of their scholarships.
