Benefits of the TWAS-NRF Doctoral Fellowship include the following for the recipient:

  • Funding for Partial Cost of Study (PCS) will only pay for tuition ($30,000 annually) and living expenses, up to a maximum of R101,196 per student annually.
  • For recipients of TWAS-NRF doctorate awards, NRF will pay for the least expensive return economy airfare as well as the cost of a study permit and/or visa.

Eligibility Criteria:

The candidate must meet each of the requirements listed below in order to be eligible for the TWAS-NRF Doctoral Fellowship:

  • English is the required language.
  • All nations worldwide (except the EU) are eligible. To see the list of qualified nations, click this link.
  • Cannot be planning to live, study, or work in South Africa in 2022;
  • Applicants who have returned to their country of origin after working, pursuing a degree, conducting research, or studying there for fewer than two (2) years are not allowed to apply anymore;
  • Need to have earned an MSc in a natural science discipline;
  • In order to be eligible for doctoral funding, candidates must meet the following requirements. They must be no older than 32 on December 31, 2023. Additionally they must be enrolled full-time in a South African public university.
  • Participating institutions may include Science Councils, National Research Facilities, Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), and National Research Facilities.
