The Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship for International Students offers a $10,000 New Zealand contribution to the tuition for a qualifying study.

University of Otago International Master’s Research Scholarship

NZ$17,172 annual stipend and a one-year tuition fee waiver for master’s study, capped at the domestic cost (excluding insurance and student services fee)

Doctor of Philosophy: NZ$30,696 annual stipend and a 36-month waiver of domestic tuition fees (insurance and student services fees not included). For professional doctorates (DClinDent, DMA, DBA, and EDd), there is an annual stipend of NZ$30,696 in addition to a 36-month tuition fee waiver capped at the domestic rate (insurance and student services cost excluded).

Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship for International Students

In 2024 or 2025, the University of Otago will welcome international undergraduate students who are either resident in New Zealand or who are studying remotely or online from outside the country.

University of Otago Doctoral Scholarship

Funding is available to assist doctorate candidates attending the University of Otago through the University of Otago doctorate Scholarship.

Eligibility Criteria:

To be eligible for the University of Otago Scholarships, a candidate must fulfil the following requirements:

  • The language that is necessary is English.
  • All nations across the world are eligible.
  • Scholarship for International Students from the Vice-Chancellor.
    • International applicants to universities must meet the following requirements in order to be admitted: they must have successfully finished Years 12 and/or 13 in a New Zealand school, and an equivalent foundation level course at a New Zealand postsecondary institution. Additionally, they must not be Australian or New Zealand citizens, permanent residents, or holders of resident visas for either country.
    • Obtaining a globally recognised diploma, such as the ATAR, International Baccalaureate, or A Levels, in New Zealand or in a foreign high school; or
      • fulfilling additional international entrance standards listed on the Otago website; and
      • Have not typically completed any prior coursework at a university in New Zealand; are willing to pay the international tuition costs; are qualified to apply for; and plan to start full-time study in the first year of a programme that qualifies.
  • University of Otago International Master’s Research Scholarship
        • Candidates must be pursuing their first master’s degree.
        • International students pursuing a Master’s degree with a thesis.

Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship for International Students

An entrance scholarship to the University of Otago is offered to international students under the Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship. Therefore, for terms and conditions that typically apply to all entrance scholarships, see the Entrance Scholarship Terms and Conditions.

University of Otago International Master’s Research Scholarship

Online applications for scholarships are available on the university website. An invitation to apply for scholarships is sent once the application for admission to the required qualification is finished.
