The following requirements must be met in order to be eligible for the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship:

  • English is the required language.
  • Canada’s permanent residents, citizens, and foreign nationals are the eligible countries.
  • Your first doctorate degree should be your goal. This includes combination undergraduate/graduate research programmes like MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, and JD/PhD, providing they include a substantial and proven research component. It should be noted that funding is only available for the PhD component of combined degrees; as of May 1, 2024, you should not have finished more than 20 months of doctorate study.

Application Process:

  • Visit the official website using the link provided at the conclusion. Nonetheless, the following are crucial guidelines for applying to get a Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship:

  • Step 1: Use Universities Canada’s website to research Canadian universities before submitting your application. We advise looking through the websites of each university and doing extensive research on the doctoral programme of your choice, potential supervisors, and other relevant information.
  • Step 2: Verify that your desired institution has a quota for the year you are applying by visiting the Vanier CGS quota page.
    • Finalise the Application Process:
      • Applications can be started in two different methods. One of two things happens: either the student notifies the graduate studies faculty at the chosen university that they intend to apply to the Vanier CGS programme, or the university contacts the desired candidate to start the nomination process.
      • The student uses the ResearchNet application system to create their application and submits it to the nominating university by the internal deadline that is set in ResearchNet by the nominating institution.
      • The internal candidate selection procedure is carried out by the nominated organisation.
      • By November 1, 2024 (20:00 Eastern Time), the nominating institution submits proposed nominations to the Vanier-Banting Secretariat (the Secretariat).
      • The review procedure is managed by the Secretariat.
      • The Steering Committee for Tri-Agency Programmes (TAP) receives recommendations from the Secretariat.
      • Final decisions for the Vanier CGS programme are approved and endorsed by the TAP Steering Committee.
      • The results of the competition are communicated to the nominated candidates in April 2025.

Important

  • Nominations for candidates must come from the school where they wish to go. The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (Vanier CGS) programme does not accept direct applications from candidates.
It is advisable for candidates to confirm internal deadlines at the nominating institution by speaking with the administrator.
  • Before starting their application, candidates should read the Selection Committee Guide. Together with helpful information on how the criteria are reviewed, this handbook includes a list of the three evaluation criteria.
  • Resources for applicants, institutions, referees, and evaluators to take into account equality, diversity, and inclusion in their application have been assembled by the Secretariat. Candidates are advised to study the available materials prior to starting the application writing process.
