Deadline For Application:

Financial Benefits:

The Confucius Institute scholarship covers tuition and lodging costs (in a university residence, in a room shared with another individual), basic medical insurance, and a monthly allowance for personal needs, which is divided as follows:

  • Monthly tuition for BTCSOL students or Chinese language and culture courses is 2,500 Yuan (about 350 USD).
  • MTCSOL students pay 3,000 Yuan per month (equal to approximately 420 USD).

Confucius Institute Scholarship Duration and Categories:

Scholarships to study Chinese language and culture. There are three kinds:

  • Scholarships available for the academic year: They last 11 months and can begin in September or March.

Future Chinese teachers can apply for scholarships. There are three options:

  • Scholarship to study Master of Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language (MTCSOL) for two academic years.
  • Scholarship for one academic year of Chinese language and culture and 2 years of MTCSOL: Total number of academic courses is three.
  • Scholarship to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language (BTCSOL), which consists of four academic courses.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Not have Chinese nationality and be in good health. If you plan to study for more than six months, you must demonstrate that you are in good physical and mental health in order to complete your residency permit in China. You must provide a duly completed copy of the official Chinese medical form or Foreigner Physical Examination Form to your destination university (it is not necessary during the application process).
  • Applicants must be between the ages of 16 and 35 (up to 45 years if they work as Chinese instructors at the time of application). Undergraduate scholarship applicants must be less than 20 years old.
  • It is required to have a degree of Chinese language proficiency. This criteria varies depending on the type of scholarship. For example, to be eligible for a scholarship to study Chinese language and culture, you must get at least 180 points on the written HSK3 and 60 points on the oral HSK.
  • Minimum qualification: To be eligible for the MTCSOL scholarship, you must provide a diploma as well as your undergraduate academic record. For the BTCSOL scholarship or the Chinese language classes, you must demonstrate that you have finished your high school education. If you do not have this paperwork in English or Chinese, you must offer a sworn translation into either of the two languages..
  • A letter of recommendation for scholarship applicants interested in pursuing a Chinese course or BTCSOL, as well as two for MTCSOL scholarship applicants.
    The letters must be signed by the in-charge person at the Confucius Institute where you applied for the scholarship.
  • Applicants for the MTCSOL scholarship who demonstrate that they have a job as a Chinese language professor after completing their master’s degree studies in China will be given preference.

Application Process:

To apply for the Confucius Institute Scholarship, please follow the steps below:

  • Application delivery: If you are a Confucius Institute student (and would like to apply for this scholarship), please contact the scholarship coordinator. The application must be submitted electronically through the website (all documents must be scanned, including your passport and a passport-sized photo).
    •  Send the relevant paper documents (ideally certified copies, as these will not be returned). The person in charge of your Confucius Institute’s scholarships will be responsible for submitting them by post to the headquarters of Hanban. If you are not a Confucius Institute student, you can apply online and send your documentation to the nearest Confucius Institute, a Chinese embassy or consulate in your country, or one of Hanban’s exam centres or educational institutions.
  • Result date: The final scholarship results will be available on the official link in early July (if you start in September) or early January (if you start in March).
  • Sending visa processing documents: The visa processing materials are mailed within 15 days of the outcome being published. At this stage, I recommend patience, as you may have to wait more than a month to receive the letter.
